  18. Literary theory: "Literary theory" is the body of ideas and methods we use in the practical reading of literature. By literary theory we refer not to the meaning of a work of literature but to the theories that reveal what literature can mean.
Literary criticism: Literary criticism is the evaluation, analysis, description, or interpretation of literary works.
Feminist theory: Feminist theory, or feminism, is support of equality for women and men
Double standards: a rule or principle that is unfairly applied in different ways to different people or groups
Patriarch: the male head of a family or tribe

    http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2015/04/14/on-equal-pay-day-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-gender-pay-gap/

This article discusses inequality issues between men and women regarding wages. Statistics have proven that women have to generally work longer hours to earn the same as a man in some work forces. Part of the reason can be attributed to the time women take off from studying or working due to other obligations. Someone in the household has to take care of the baby and that is usually appointed to the women due to social formalities. Work forces have taken advantage of this fact and are underpaying women. The only way to seek change is to change what has been established. Some work forces see men as the real “workers” and thus pay them more. Our society needs to change our conception on women as a whole.

The article identifies exactly in what ways women are treated in today's society. The factor that stricked me the most was that women have a higher chance of not being offered heath insurance, and are least likely able to have a retirment savings plan. Women who have recieved higher education then some men, and women are still getting payed less. This issue in the United States and around the world has to be dealt with in a serious matter. I stand with women all the way on this topic and encourage government officials to take action.

  20. Literary Theory: The underlying principles by which we attempt to understand literature. It is the theories that help us achieve the meaning of certain literature.
Literary Criticism: The art or practice of judging and commenting on the qualities and character of literary works.
Feminist Theory: The support of equality for both women and men and understanding the nature of gender inequality.
Double Standards: A same rule or principle that is applied differently to certain people or groups; often based on gender.

    http://www.psypost.org/2015/11/overweight-men-just-as-likely-as-overweight-women-to-face-discrimination-39226

Historically, women have been at a disadvantage to men when it comes to obtaining a job. This idea has been around for a while, so it is huge to hear that the playing field is starting to get leveled. Though, in this case, it is not good for either party, but at least they go down together! What I do like about discrimination of overweight people in finding a job (both men and women now), is that being overweight is something that people can change. Unless your Bruce Jenner, most people can't just become another gender, so if you're a women looking in a male dominated work force, you're kind of stuck that way. However, everyone has some control over their weight. I believe that discrimination of anyone is a horrible thing to do, but at least it's not a matter of gender inequality on this one. Now, people can no longer point their fingers at the double standards in their job search, and instead can focus on the real problem; the double cheeseburger in their stomach.

Through out the course of history, gender inequality has been demonstrated in the most obvious ways, but also in subtle ways. Many people don't recognize the gender bias occurring in today's society because it is done subtly. Small aspects of the community, such as street names, are discussed in this article. There are very few streets named after women. Most of them are named after men due to the importance men are perceived to have in society. I am not saying to give women more rights or recognition but just to establish equality. There are still double standards for what men and women can do and I believe we should get rid of the unfairness that has been instilled through out the course of time.

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/margiewarrell/2015/03/10/what-will-it-take-to-make-gender-equality-the-norm-not-the-exception/
The opportunities that women have has changed drastically over time. Women can vote, hold high and powerful positions, also as well as taking care of a family. Women and men aren't as different as people think so it's only fair that they get equal treatment. Something the article talks about is paternity leave which could be very beneficial so the mother isn't at home all alone with the newborn or they can choose to not have it. Women even have the choice to have a family or not which is a big difference since before women were supposed to just clean, cook, and take care of a family. The gender gap needs to be filled because there are some things that women can do that men can't but it wouldn't be socially acceptable for the women to do them. In all, gender equality should be a social norm and not an exception.

    http://www.hreonline.com/HRE/view/story.jhtml?id=534359458

This article discusses the fact that despite efforts to create gender equality in the workplace, many women are still not striving for higher positions. This could possibly due to the fact that many women don’t see other women in these higher positions and are therefore intimidated and less motivated to move up. I am not saying that all woman refrain from achieving the highest position they could receive- many are very determined. However, the fact that most of the top company positions are held by males may contribute to the fact that some females feel discouraged. If the perception of company managers can be seen as a close to equal ratio of successful men and women, then women who are moving up may be more encouraged to pursue those higher positions.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/22/upshot/a-disadvantaged-start-hurts-boys-more-than-girls.html?_r=0

This article mainly discusses how boys are actually more disadvantaged than girls in school and at getting certain jobs after school. The author notes that this gender gap is "far bigger for poor people and for black people". The reason behind boys being disadvantaged here is boys have more dramatic responses to disadvantages and discipline problems (bad for jobs that require empathy and cooperation). I found it interesting to hear of boys being at a disadvantage for something when girls are often the disadvantaged. It was also interesting that the author was female. Even though various people claim certain areas and ways that girls are behind in education, the explanation given by the author sort of makes sense. I think the key issue here is behavior. Boys simply have a lot of pressure outside of school to be a man, and the aggressive behavior that results from that is not good in a learning environment.

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/18/opinions/burns-jennifer-lawrence-women-pay/index.html

No matter the job, women are paid less to do the same thing their male counterparts do. Most of the problems that deal with gender equality hark back to the time when the male was the one who went out and provided for his family, and the wife stayed at home and did all the things that needed to be done around the house. We are still having a hard time transitioning out of this phase. Even though this article is about Jennifer Lawrence, it still shows that no matter what job we do, women will still don't get treated/payed the same as their work suggests they should. So until we start encouraging women to step up and demand to be paid more, the female population will remain in the current state it's in today.

In the article, a recipient of the "Glamour Woman of the Year" award returns it after hearing about Caitlyn Jenner receiving it. Words used to describe Jenner's receiving the award as "insulting" and questioning "Was there no woman in America, or the rest of the world, more deserving than this man?". To me this shows that despite many people jumping on Jenner's back of her "courage" and "bravery" that others don't feel the same of it.

    http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/nov/14/transgender-girl-chicago-school-locker-room-ban-civil-rights

The article discusses a mother who deals with the discrimination her daughter suffers because she is transgender, and how it's unfair that her daughter is banned from the girl's locker room and isn't allowed to play on a girls' sports team. I think it was really good that the mother was supportive of her daughter, especially when compared to many parents who won't support their children simply because they don't identify as the sex they were assigned at birth. I also believe that her daughter shouldn't be banned from these privileges. She identifies as female, therefore she is female. The fact that she was banned was a violation of her rights, and this seems to show how society feels about transgender people. Even celebrities such as Laverne Cox and Woman of the Year winner Caitlyn Jenner still have to deal with discrimination; their fame makes little difference in the way transgender people, especially transgender women, are treated. Even though they should be treated with common fairness and respect, they are instead violated of their rights and not seen as equal to everyone else.

This article is discussing Bruce (Caitlyn) Jenner’s transition from man to woman. I believe this story is important to our generation because of how common situations like this are becoming. Transgender people get treated unfairly and are not allowed in certain gender-based areas such as bathrooms or locker rooms, but Caitlyn Jenner has began making an impact on those people’s lives because of her fame and her voice. In my opinion, she debuted herself at the wrong time, after being married for 25 years and having children. But despite that, she is changing the transgender world and making it a little more understanding to those who are not transgender. Regardless, there will always be judgement and unfairness aimed toward those who are not considered “normal”, but Caitlyn Jenner has helped ease the process for them and will most likely continue doing so.

Gender equality is when everyone is treated the same and have all the same rights no matter what sex they are. For example employment, healthcare or even jobs. You can't discriminate based on what gender they are especially when they have good qualities all together. My article talks about women in Ireland and how barely over half of them are employed. While it stated that less than a fifth of members of local authority are women. Others are worse for men, nothing seems to be equal when it comes down to it.

This article discusses the possible positive outcomes of electing a female president. It also comments on the lack of female CEOs in the work force, and how that can change with a higher presence of female leaders in society. This will also cause women to feel like they can contribute to society in a meaningful way; the influx of females in leadership roles will allow for new innovations in fields from the different perspective they can bring to their jobs.

This article discusses a particular school where the students feel so pressured to live up to certain gender standards that it leads to physical problems far deeper than expected. Girls are diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and major eating disorders because they believe that a women should be thin and that women can't participate in physical sports. Men are physically abusive and have major drinking problems because they believe that is what men do when in in reality everyone in the school hates acting these ways. They all put on an act just to impress each other and it's really sad to see this in today's society. Girls will spend thousands of dollars on their physical appearance Hyatt because they feel as if they need to follow the standards that women have. Women must look put together, pretty, and polished at all times when in reality women should be able to live their lives freely as they wish because gender a persons is a medical definition, not a way of life.
